In terms of Luke's map, TFA begins with Old Man giving Poe the MacGuffin which everyone is chasing until the end of the film in which it's pieced together with R2's. I feel like it's fair to refer to the wayfinder as a MacGuffin. It comes across as a retread of the map from Force Awakens. Once they've reached said destination, the "wayfinder" which has never been referenced before in films is never mentioned again. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but did my description contradict it? According to various leaks The cast spend most of the film chasing down a compass and/or sith knife just to get coordinates for wherever Palpatine is watching Disney+ from. In fiction, a MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin) is an object, device, or event that is necessary to the plot and the motivation of the characters, but insignificant, unimportant, or irrelevant in itself.
